WILLIAM HERBERT (1718-1795)
A New Directory for the East Indies. London: for the editor, 1758 [but 1759]. Large 2° (634 x 484mm). Title printed in red and black with woodcut vignette, 28 (of 29, usually called for) engraved charts, 12 double-page, one by G. Rollos after Herbert, mounted on guards throughout. (Some light dampstaining occasionally touching image, occasional very minor spotting.) Contemporary brown and tan blind-tooled calf, titled in gilt on upper cover (worn). Provenance: John Clevland (1734-1817), (armorial bookplate pasted inside upper cover).
The second edition of Herbert's directory for the navigation of the seas of the East Indies. Based on the French Neptune Oriental, Herbert published two editions of his Directory in 1788 [1789], with supplementary charts and 'additions, corrections and explanatory notes'. The hydrographer Herbert travelled to India circa 1748, as a purser's clerk aboard an East Indiaman. By the early 1750s he had established himself as a printer and seller of engravings, prints and charts on London Bridge, publishing the first edition of the Directory in 1758. A third edition followed in 1767, with later editions edited by Samuel Dunn. This copy belonged to John Clevland, son of the Secretary to the Admiralty (see lot 2), who had a long parliamentary and naval career, representing Barnstaple for over 40 years. He was also a director of Greenwich Hospital. NMM 351.
