WILLIAM DANIELL (1769-1837) AND SAMUEL DAVIS (1760-1819)

[Views in Bootan. London: 1813, watermarked 1810]. Oblong 2° (425 x 570mm. approx.). 5 (of 6) fine handcoloured aquatint plates by Daniell after Davis. (Plates browned, lightly soiled and with margins repaired, lacking the final plate 'View between Murichom & Choka', the letterpress title, 7ll. text and a tinted engraved additional title.) Unbound.

A SIGNIFICANT FRAGMENT OF THE FIRST EDITION of 'probably the rarest of William [Daniell]'s sets of engravings' (Abbey). Only two complete copies of this work have sold in major auctions in the past 30 years: the most recent being the Keynes copy (Christie's, 7 April 2004, lot 210, £38,000). Samuel Davis was the first Western artist to paint in the Himalayas and the only Western artist of distinction to work in Bhutan. Unusually, Daniell has here signed engravings that he produced from the work of another artist -- this was apparently because Davis was a good friend. Abbey Travel II, 434. (5)
