ANDREW SMITH (1797-1872)
Illustrations of the Zoology of South Africa; consisting chiefly of figures and descriptions of the objects of natural history collected during an expedition to the interior of South Africa 1834-1836. London: Stewart and Murray for Smith, Elder, 1838-1849. 5 volumes, 4° (313 x 236mm). 279 numbered plates, 275 lithographic, 4 engraved, and one aquatint, most by and after George H. Ford, 267 handcoloured, some heightened with gum arabic, comprising: Mammalia, 52 plates (48 handcoloured); Aves, 114 plates (plate 6 a handcoloured aquatint, 113 handcoloured lithographs); Reptilia, 78 plates (75 handcoloured); Pisces, 31 plates (26 handcoloured); Invertebratae, 4 handcoloured engraved plates after Charles M. Curtis. (Some light spotting and occasional light browning to plates, plate 3 of Mammalia with slight waterstain, plate 29 of Pisces with short marginal tear.) Contemporary green half morocco, spines with gilt lettering and armorial (extremities rubbed, coners bumped, some scuff marks, the Invertebratae volume rebacked with old spine relaid). Provenance: Thomas Page, Brighton (bookseller's label).
A 'HANDSOME AND VALUABLE WORK', giving 'full particulars of the natural history subjects of South Africa collected by Dr. Andrew Smith's expedition' (Mendelssohn). George Henry Ford (1809-1876) was the expedition member responsible for the drawings which were either of living or only recently dead specimens, and he also executed the plates. Plates 18 and 37 in the Mammalia were never published.
