XVII ('The drawings for this work were made when Salt accompanied Lord Valentia as his secretary on the first British mission to Abyssinia, sent to conclude an alliance to obtain a port in the Red Sea in case France, under Napoleon, should seize Egypt (Maggs). Salt's drawings were also used for the sixty-nine engravings in the account of the mission published by Bulmer in 1809,...The drawings for both publications became the property of Lord Valentia.'
