W.T. Copeland & Sons' association with the British Arctic Expedition began with the special services they supplied to both of Nares's ships, the Alert and Discovery. The ships were sent out by the Admiralty to attempt to reach the North Pole by way of Smith Sound. A series of sledging journeys culminated in Commmander Albert Hastings Markham's Farthest North of 83°20'N (12 May 1876), a record latitude at that time.
