FIRST EDITION, FIRST IMPRESSION. PRESENTATION COPY of 'a classic [account] and one of the finest in the Antarctic literature' (Rosove). For this work, 'Shackleton once again had the writing assistance of Edward Saunders [as with The Heart of the Antarctic]. Shackleton dictated the text to him early in 1917; the final editing was done by Leonard Hussey of the marooned Elephant Island party ... Shackleton derived most of the account from his recollections; he had kept only a rudimentary diary. He based the stories of the marooned Elephant Island party ... and the Ross Sea party ... on diaries and conversations' (Rosove). Conrad p.224; Rosove 308.A1 ('Uncommon'); Spence 1107; Taurus 105 (erroneously describing the binding as blocked in gilt).
