Both shown standing foursquare with heads lowered and slightly turned to the side, the heads well modelled with open mouth, flared nostrils and expressive eyes below the pricked ears, the gracefully arched necks grooved and carved on one side to suggest the combed mane, the separate saddle blankets set beneath saddles covered with a cloth tied in a knot on either side, the separate tails tied with a knot on top, one horse covered in white pigment, the other in brick-red pigment

Lot Essay

A similar painted grey pottery horse of smaller size (55 cm. high) with removable saddle is illustrated in the catalogue of the Jacques Barrère exhibition, Art D'Extreme Orient, Paris, 20 September - 30 October 1991, pp. 50 and 51.

The results of Oxford Authentication Ltd. thermoluminescence test nos. C102g53 and C102g54 are consistent with the dating of this lot.
