Lot Essay

An artist and an avid athlete himself, Joe Brown is best remembered for his sculptures of sports figures in action. Following the example of his mentor, R. Tait McKenzie, Brown's sculptures communicate a graceful fluidity and inherent strength of the human figure. His sculpture of world-record-setting Olympian Jesse Owens captures the confident intensity and focus of the runner.
