Lot Essay
The poems by Ota Nanpo (Shokusanjin) (1749-1823) read:
Autumn:
Katsurao no yukure ni kuru yakusoku no
tsure o matsuchi no yama no yado kamo
A handsome man promised to come to see me this evening, but he hasn't. I wait for my mate at the lodging house on Mount Matsuchi.
Winter:
Mimeguri no torii no kasaki omokereba
nobiakaraneba mienu Yoshiwara
If the snow on the gate of Mimeguri Shrine is heavy, I cannot see the Yoshiwara without standing on my toes.
