From the middle Heian period (794-1185), the basic form of the saddle did not change. It was designed to accomodate mounted archers. Notches on the sides of the pommel allowed the rider to grip the saddle with his legs while standing in the stirrups, shooting arrows while his horse is in a full gallop. The decoration of snowflakes and umbrellas is simple and refined.
