A Lacquer Picnic Set (Sage Jubako)
Edo period (19th century)
Lacquered in gold and silver hiramaki-e and nashiji against a roiro-nuri ground with an overall design of moonflowers (yugao) on a trellis, the sake bottle with only the blossoms on vines and the stopper painted with a chrysanthemum head, the bottle set on a recessed stand contaning a rectangular drawer, the four-tier food box of square section set beneath a rectangular footed tray designed with a pheasant on rocks in gold and black hiramaki-e, silver togidashi, nashiji and kirigane; interiors of boxes and frame red lacquer; edges of frame nashiji or painted with scrolling vines and pine needles in gold lacquer
