A Lacquer Picnic Set for Soba Noodles (Soba Bento)
(20th century)
Decorated in shunkei-nuri with the surface texture of the wood beneath with a striated surface, the carrying frame set on a low stand and fitted with six removable sliding side panels that are used for serving trays, the utensils of bamboo lacquered to match the frame and comprising: five covered bowls, each with a fitted circular dish and set into a removable tray; a rectangular covered box containing five small square bottles with stoppers, five soba cups and a square sake flask in a removable bamboo basket; two rectangular drawers; the frame with lobed apertures on each side

The lacquer technique shunkei-nuri takes its name from a 14th-century lacquer artist known as Shunkei who worked in Osaka. Pieces done in this technique are first stained with red or yellow and then covered with a translucent lacquer coating.
