Portrait of the official Changkae-kong

In accordance with Confucian practices adopted from Ming-dynasty China, this offical portrait was mandated by the Korean state. It was likely executed by an artist of the Bureau of Painting (Tohwa so) who was prohibited from signing his work. The portrait is probably posthumous and was intended to instill in the viewer the moral precepts of Choson-period officialdom exemplified by this virtuous man.

The sitter wears an offical court robe (danryong) and silk winged hat (samo). His silk rank badge (hyungbae) indicates that he is a civil official of the first rank. A leopard pelt is draped over the rails of his chair.
