Lot Essay

Nicole Groult was the sister of Paul Poiret, the innovative couturier and art collector. After World War I, Groult opened a fashion salon with the help of Gabrielle Picabia and the then unknown Elsa Schiaparelli. Together they sold designs to such noteable women as Dorothy Parker and Virgina Woolf.

André Groult, Nicole's husband and a furniture designer, introduced her to Laurencin. The artist painted Madame Groult on at least three occasions between 1922-1931, including the present work.
