Lot Essay

Bérard attended Académie Ranson studying with Maurice Denis and Edouard Vuillard. His first exhibition at Galerie Druet in 1924 was part of a group exhibition with several other Neo-Romantic painters including, Eugene Berman and Pavel Tchelitchew. Bérard's portraits from the 1920s-30s were often imbued with an intensity and dream-like undertone as in the present work and the accompanying lot.
