Found in the Gulf of California, the La Paz pearl oyster shell, or pinctada mazatlanica, was the historic source for black pearls prior to those cultivated in 19th century French Polynesia. Primarily harvested on the coasts of Panama and Baja California, these mollusks are able to produce an array of colors, like the three strand necklace featured here, but usually occur in sizes under 10mm.
