Lot Essay

From Gallery 291, Paul Strand was exposed to the work of such artists such as Brancusi, Rodin, Matisse and Picasso, and became aware of how sculptural forms imposed a presence that affected surrounding space. Strand was intent on developing photographic and processing techniques to liberate three dimensional form from the two dimensional plane in order to express architectural volume. One technique Strand used to achieve an appearance of greater depth was, as here, to apply lacquer to the surface of the print.
There are approximately 3 known silver prints of this image in this format.
