Lot Essay

When publishing this piece Watson and Porter note that it is one of a small group of items which are relatively heavily potted, many of which are painted over a manganese glaze, that appear to be late developments from the Tell Minis group proper. Another jar of the group, although of more rounded form, formerly in the Barlow Collection, is now in the Ashmolean Museum, while a related bowl also has the same provenance (G. Fehérvári: Islamic Pottery, a Comprehensive Study based on the Barlow Collection, London, 1983, no.153, pl.61c and no.152). Fragments relating to the two Barlow pieces were also part of the Bartels Gift at the Ashmolean.
