Of cylindrical form with raised band above and below, resting on three hoof feet and legs, the sides engraved and originally inlaid depicting ten figures of saints each within an arcade with diaper pattern spandrels, one side with a quatrefoil cartouche for fitting the original handle, surface considerably rubbed, associated lead liner

Lot Essay

Four other incense burner bases are published with Christian imagery, although each of them has a different arrangement from the others. These are now in the British Museum, the Museum für Islamische Kunst, Berlin, the Royal Scottish Museum, Edinburgh, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. (E. Baer: Ayyubid Metalwork with Christian Imagery, Leiden, 1989, pls.1-20). The Berlin example is the clsoest to the present lot, in condition as well as icongraphy.
