Lot Essay

This appears to be a preliminary drawing which has then been pounced through to give the outlines for a full painting. The finished painting would have been similar to the two royal paintings in the St. Petersburg Murraqa' folios 98 and 99 attributed to the artist 'Ali Quli Jabbadar, and a painting sold at Sotheby's 25 April 2002, lot 42. The facial style here is not so close to that of 'Ali Quli Jubaddar; it is closer to that of Sheikh 'Abbasi.
