Lot Essay

The ornate form of the splats on this pair of armchairs closely relates to a design by Thomas Chippendale, published in his Director, third Ed., 1762, pl. X. While the published example shows the chairs with cabriole legs in the 'French' taste, the current examples show the slightly earlier form of moulded square legs. Chippendale's Director was widely distributed amongst patrons and other cabinet-makers who would have used his designs as a source of inspiration.
