The double-arched moulded cresting above a pair of conformingly shaped doors with later bevelled mirrors enclosing an elaborately fitted interior of drawers, pigeon-holes and document slides around a pair of concave arched cupboard doors flanked by Corinthian capped columns enclosing secret compartments beneath gilt figures, the sloping feather-banded fall with a document rest and enclosing an interior of pigeon-holes and drawers above a well, the case with three long graduated drawers on bracket feet, originally with bun feet, the bracket feet probably 18th century replacements and subsequently reveneered, inscribed in black ink 5531, the handles and brass mounts later

Lot Essay

The bureau's elaborate fitted interior of gilt figures atop Corinthian columns recalls the famous example supplied for the Blue Bedroom at Belton House, Lincolnshire as illustrated in H. Tipping, English Homes, Period IV, vol. I, London, 1922, p. 226, fig. 290.
