Lot Essay

This scene was most likely based on a print made after an original by Rubens. Many versions exist, differing in colour scheme, border design and the manner the subjects are painted. Various examples of similar plates are illustrated in Hervouët et Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes: Décor Occidentale, Paris, 1986, p. 310.
