The prime version of this portrait appears to be the one in the collection of Dover Museum, Kent which passed by descent in the Russell family until 2000. The provenance and literature listed almost certainly relate to that painting rather than the present work.

The sitter, a merchant, was the son of Michael Russell of Maison-Dieu, Dover. He married in 1745, Hannah, daughter of Henry Henshaw Esq. of Dover. A number of sittings for 'Mr. Russell' are recorded in Romney's Diaries between 1777-81 and the artist was paid £42 in November 1782 for the present portrait.
