Lot Essay

The Widener family of Philadelphia formed one of the greatest collections of works of art in America at the end of the 19th century. The superb paintings assembled by Peter (d. 1915), and his son Joseph (1872-1943), formed the nucleus of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, along with works donated by the Kress Foundation.
