Shaped circular, on four leaf-capped scroll feet, the field flat-chased and engraved with scrolling strapwork within trellis pattern and shells, the border with masks at intervals, the field finely engraved with a coat-of-arms in a baroque cartouche flanked by allegorical figures representing Geography and Literature, fully marked on reverse; also struck three times with additional maker's marks

The figural cartouche on this salver relates to the work of engraver Joseph Sympson (see lot 1063). Another salver by Abercromby of 1737 with a Sympson-attributed cartouche was sold at Christie's, London, December 18, 1997, lot 146.
