Born in Paris in 1822, Alfred Dehodencq received his early artistic education in the studio of Leon Coigniet. He made frequent journeys to Spain and Algeria, and made his debut at the Salon in 1844, winning a gold medal in 1865. Today, Dehodencq is counted as one of the petit maitres of the Romantic School who fall under the widely cast shadow of Eugène Delacroix.
