THE MUSLIM SAINT MADR (MADARI) WITH A COMPANY OF MAGICIANS, BY DESI DAS, LUCKNOW, CIRCA 1780
Gouache heightened with gold on paper laid down on an album page, gathered below a night sky, Madr dressed in floral gold robes sits with a group of magicians before a covered pole terminating in a gold hand, to the right an attendant holds a necklace, several other woman seated and standing either side, armed soldiers behind, to the left a group sit with hands outstretched before numerous oil lamps which light the whole scene, a holy man and an attendant sit before drums, in the foreground a youth holding a cane stands before a kneeling man, inscribed in gold (lower right) amal Desi Das, 'the work of Desi Das.' -- 26 x 17.5cm.
