This piece is very similar in field and border design to one published in Burns, James, D.: The Caucasus, Traditions in Weaving, Seattle, 1987, no.14, sold in these Rooms, 18 October 2001, lot 275. The present rug, with its inclusion of a greater number of smaller motifs in the field and alteration of the original proportions of the afshan design, was probably made a little time after the Burns rug. The note to that lot gives references to further related pieces, many of which have been attributed to the Sauj Bulaq Kurds.
