A ROMAN BRONZE JUG
CIRCA 1ST-2ND CENTURY A.D.
The slender body tapering to a narrow concave neck with egg and dart rim moulding, a chased pattern around the shoulder of two pairs of cranes interspersed with foliate motifs, grooved concentric rings on the base, the additional handle decorated in high relief with a profile head, crane and a female mask on the escutcheon, 5½ in. (14 cm.) high; a vessel handle in the form of a dolphin, ridged side fins below the eyes, long upturned beak and splayed tail, 2 7/8 in. (7.4 cm.) long; and a Roman bronze patera handle terminating in a duck head, with bulbous forehead and long bill, 5 3/8 in. (13.5 cm.) long, both 1st-2nd Century A.D. (3)
