A ROMAN MARBLE LIDDED CINERARIUM

The front with two Ionic foliate decorated columns, between which a leafy garland with fruit, two birds in each corner pecking at the fruit and another in the centre pecking at an over-turned basket of fruit, a central tabula ansata is inscribed "DIS MAN[ibus], SACRVM, CM CICVRINI", the pedimented lid with a bearded Silenus head and open basket, an acanthus leaf at each corner, on later acanthus moulded base, repaired

Formerly in the collection of the Reverend William C. Hall, Vicar of Burton Turf and Smallburgh, Norfolk; the collection was formed mainly during the 1940s-1950s.
The above lot is accompanied by a handwritten card describing the cinerarium, signed W. C. Hall, and by a letter dated 8 September 1958 from D. E. Strong, Assistant Keeper in the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities, The British Museum, London, translating the inscription as "Sacred to the gods of the underworld" followed by the genitive of the person commemorated.
