REIGN OF DJOSER, DYNASTY III, CIRCA 2650 B.C.
Comprising three rectangular, slightly convex tiles with attachment holes at the back, one tile back with an incised glyph
2 1/8 x 1½ in. (6 x 3.9 cm.) (3)
Provenance
One tile was acquired by the present owner's grandfather for his collection in the 1950s-60s, the other two were acquired on the European market 7-10 years ago.
This lot is accompanied by an export licence from the French Ministry of Culture.

No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis

Lot Essay

These wall tiles imitated reed matting and covered underground chambers of Djoser's Step Pyramid and his South Tomb. It has been suggested that markings at the top of some of the tile backs may be workshop batch markings or designations for wall placement.
