The compressed globular flask with papyrus-columned neck to which two seated baboons are attached, the shoulder decorated with a broad floral collar with ribbons hanging down on one side, between which is a column of hieroglyphs reading: "May Ptah (give) life to (its lord?)", with turquoise glazed details

Formerly in the collection of Joseph Lacoste, art specialist and photographer, in the early 20th Century, France.

Lot Essay

The ancient Egyptian New Year started in late summer, when the Nile began its annual flood. Numerous rituals would have been performed to ensure a harmonious transition between the years and to ward off the many dangers that were believed to threaten the cosmic stability of the land at this time.
