Violet de Portal was born in 1867, the daughter of a Canon in the Church of England who worked for the Duke of Northumberland and the Earl of Caernarvon. The de Portals were Huguenots mainly based in Hampshire and printers specialising in bank notes. The family firm was bought out by de la Rue about forty years ago.
The embroiderer of the carpet was Violet's brother, Henry. There was another brother, Maurice and a sister Margaret, known as Daisy. The following five lots are sold by Violet's grand-daughters.
