Lot Essay
We are grateful to Drs. Luuk Pijl for the attribution, given on the basis of photographs. As noted by Drs. Pijl, the composition follows that of the signed and dated painting of 1609 by Jan Breughel I sold, Sotheby's, London, 16 July 1980, lot 16 number. Such adaptations are common in Bredael's oeuvre: for example that sold, Christie's, New York, 12 January 1996, lot 74, which is a variant of Breughel's prototype of 1603 in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp, or that sold, Christie's, New York, 26 January 2001, lot 46, which derives from the prototype in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich.
