Lot Essay

The composition derives from an invention of Van Orley's (see, for example, that recorded by Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, VIII, Leiden and Brussels, p. 113, no. 166, pl. 116) that seems to have been popularised amongst his contemporaries and followers.
