Lot Essay

As Abraham Bredius notes on the label attached to this drawing, the painting by Metsu of which this drawing is a record is now in the Wallace Collection, London (J. Ingamells, The Wallace Collection, Catalogue of Pictures, IV, Dutch and Flemish, London, 1992, no. P206). Schouman's own inscription confirms that the painting was owned by the famous Leiden collector of drawings and paintings Dr Jan Tak in 1776, and was therefore almost certainly lot 17 in his sale on 5 September 1781.
Another drawing by Schouman after a painting in Tak's collection, Terborch's Woman spinning, was sold in these Rooms, 25 November 1992, lot 647.
