Lot Essay

Theodore Wores traveled to Hawaii and Samoa in 1901 and painted a number of works depicting the native peoples and their tropical landscape, including the present painting, during his year and a half in the region. Samoan Landscape reveals the artist's careful attention to detail and precise painting style in the wide variety of flora depicted as well as in the architecture and local costume on the figure in the foreground.
