John Thomson studied drawing under Alexander Nasmyth in 1797. He exhibited in Edinburgh from 1808 until his death, and in London at the Royal Academy and the British Institution. He became an honorary member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1830. Thomson's preferred subjects were landscapes, often with ruins. St. Andrew's Cathedral dates from around 1160, but was largely destroyed during the Reformation.
