At the young age of fifteen, Van den Santheuvel inherited a large art collection from his uncle, Pieter van den Santheuvel van Driel. During his life, Willem Bartholomeus added many paintings by contemporary artists to the collection, such as the following three lots. The collection reflects the popular collecting taste of the time, including works by Oswald Achenbach and Alexandre Calame. Van den Santheuvel was raised into the Dutch aristocracy in 1816.
