Lot Essay

During his life the Hague School painter Philip Sadée travelled actively. The stir and bustle on railway stations and shipterminals inspired him and he painted numerous works depicting travellers arriving, waiting and leaving. The present lot shows such a scene: the steamferry from Zaandam arriving in Amsterdam, townsfolk are returning home and porters are toiling with heavy luggage. For a similar work in oil see: P.A. Scheen, Lexicon Nederlandse Beeldende Kunstenaars 1750-1880, The Hague, 1981, no. 692 and T. de Liefde van Brakel, Zonder vlijt geen zegen; Philip Sadée, schilder uit de Haagse School 1837-1904, Zwolle, 1989, p. 44, no. 44. This similar version is dated 1890, so the present lot may be dated to the same period.
