Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Astrid Tümpel who suggests that the present lot is 'an important painting for the group of pre-Rembrandtists' (private communication, 5 September 2004). She compares the picture with Jan Tengnagel, The Judgement of Cambyses (private collection, The Hague, see Ger Luijten et al. Eds. Dawn of the Golden Age, Amsterdam, 1993, p. 283, no. 254, illustrated), noting that the present picture, of circa 1620/5, appears to be by a hand close to Tengnagel, but one that adopts more elements from the Caravaggists, combining them with the style of the School of Haarlem.
