Lot Essay

The prototype, upon which this picture is closely based, was painted in the mid-1730s, and sold by Adrian Hope, Christie's, 30 June 1894, lot 19 (W. G. Links, Canaletto, Oxford, 1962, no, 170(b)2, illustrated, in the collection of Mrs. Ingalls, New York). The copyist added the small dog and the single figure looking at the viewer in the lower right foreground.
