A 19th-Century polished brass theodolite,
signed Spencer Browning & Co. London, the 13-inch long body-tube with bubble level, rack and pinion focusing to the objective and slight draw-tube adjustment to the eyepiece, mounted over a 6-inch diameter half-circle with silvered scale in two quadrants and differential scale on the reverse, with micrometer fine adjustment, silvered vernier and magnifier, over the glazed compass with edge-bar needle and clamp, eight-point wind rose and a circumference scale in four quadrants, the 6-inch horizontal circle with two bubble levels, micrometer fine adjustment and clamp, the chamfered edge with silvered scale and two verniers, raised on a four-screw foot and tripod mounting -- 33cm.
