A 19th-Century polished-brass miner's dial,
signed on the compass face PATENT MINING DIAL 1055 J. CASARTELL & SON SALFORD 6, the compass with steel needle, eight compass points and degrees scales in four quadrants and 0-360° with a 0-60° vernier, mounted within the tilting alidade with two bubble levels and two folding sights with slit, hair, crosshair and simple pinhole sights, and a separate folding half-circle over the compass graduated 0-60° for alidade adjustment, the staff mounting with two clamps and fine-screw adjustment, on a turned and ebonised wooden base -- 31.8cm. (12½in.) wide
