Lot Essay
Best known for his figurative paintings that have an underlying sense of pathos and nostalgia, Ben Cabrera, or Bencab, as he is more fondly referred to as, is no stranger to sculpture either. During his stay in London in the 70s and 80s, Bencab was known to join the sculpture classes at the Camden Arts Centre. Using live models, he did a number of male and female nudes but only three were eventually cast in bronze.
This particular nude was originally done in clay, then in resin in London in 1982. It was later recast in bronze by the Crucible Gallery, Manila, in 2001, where twelve copies were made to commemorate a special occasion. They are now all in private collections.
Lying in repose, the male figure is relaxed and pensive. The sculptor manages to infuse a strong sense of masculinity through the sinewy lines of the body, despite the almost effeminate face and hair.
