Hubert. A very fine and unusual 18K gold, red garnet, diamond and tourmaline-set openface verge watch with matching châtelaine

With gilt-finished verge movement, chain fusée, turned baluster pillars, finely engraved and pierced balance cock and foot, diamond endstone, the white enamel dial with Roman numerals, outer Arabic five minute divisions, blued steel beetle and poker hands, in small circular case with red garnet and diamond-set bezel, the hinged back carved from a translucent red garnet, diamond-set thumb piece and pendant, together with a matching 18K gold and diamond-set châtelaine, an octagonal-cut red garnet with square-cut diamond-set border to the top, two glass and red tourmaline amphoras suspended from gold chains with carnelian seals carved with a bird on an open birdcage and motto La Liberté and a Cupid and dog and motto Fidelle, accompanied by a matching gold, red garnet and diamond-set ratchet key, movement and dial signed, châtelaine stamped GA PE

Lot Essay

David Hubert is listed in Baillie's Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as eminent watchmaker in London around 1714-1748. He became a master of the Clockmaker Company in 1743 and was succeeded by Joseph Barnes in circa 1747.
