Lot Essay
Accompanied by Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch in 1948 and its subsequent sale on 26 May 1956.
Reference 605 was cased in both yellow and pink gold. Both versions were available with either a plain metal dial or a unique cloisonné enamel dial. The latter could depict individual continents, hemispheres or even the entire planet. Sadly, this model was never a great commercial success and many of these watches remained unsold for years.
The present watch is a perfect example of this fact as, as stated on the Extract from the Archives, it did not find a buyer for eight years. Consequently, it is little surprising that the Extract does not mention the existance of the beautifully finished enamel dial which was probably added to the watch at the request of the original buyer.
To date less than 10 examples of reference 605 in yellow gold with cloisonné enamel dial have appeared publicly.
