Lot Essay

The present lot is distinguished by its original star dial as well as the original bracelet, dating from the fourth quarter of 1952.

This model, reference 6062, was the first Rolex wristwatch to integrate day, date, month and phases of the moon. It was produced in a small series in the 1950's, examples with the star-shaped numerals on the dial are particularly rare.

Rolex has offered only two different models of moonphase wristwatches, references 8171 and 6062. Both models are automatic, however reference 8171 (see lots 342 and 349 in this sale) has a snap on back, while reference 6062, the Oyster version, has a water-resistant-type screw back.

The reference 6062 with star dial is illustrated in Rolex Wristwatches by J.M. Dowling & J.P. Hess, p. 204 and in Ore d'Oro 2 by Jader Barracca, Giampiero Negretti, Franco Nencini, p.74.
