Incised S and impressed 27, signed G. Taubert fecit, circa 1816
Painted in imitation of a cameo with an oversized classical figure steering a sailing ship, her right hand on the tiller, her left holding the corner of a proportionally miniature sale, the reverse inscribed 'Gemalt von A.F.Gus:Taubert..in Berlin. 1816.'
6¼ in. (15.8 cm.) diameter, within contemporary gilt bronze frame chased with anthemia

Lot Essay

Gustave Friedrich Amaliius Taubert (1755-1839) was a painter at Berlin as well as the head of the figure-painting workshop.
